Miguel Isaac Hernández Estrada (born March 9, 1979) is an actor from the United States of America. After making his acting debut in the late 1990s, he attended the Juilliard School and spent the bulk of the 2000s in tiny parts. Isaac earned the AACTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his portrayal of José Ramos-Horta in the Australian film Balibo (2009). Following supporting performances in prominent films such as Body of Lies (2008), Robin Hood (2010), and Drive (2011), Isaac earned a Golden Globe nod for his performance as a singer in the Coen brothers’ dark comedy Inside Llewyn Davis (2013).

Isaac advanced his career with prominent parts in the crime drama A Most Violent Year (2014), the thriller Ex Machina (2015), and the superhero blockbuster X-Men: Apocalypse (2016). He achieved worldwide fame as Poe Dameron in the Star Wars sequel trilogy (2015–2019). Since then, he has appeared in science fiction flicks Annihilation (2018) and Dune (2021), as well as the crime drama The Card Counter (2021).

Isaac has been on television in the HBO miniseries Show Me a Hero (2015) and Scenes from a Marriage (2021), for which he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film for his portrayal of Nick Wasicsko in the former. In 2022, he started appearing in the Disney+ series Moon Knight as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Moon Knight (Steven Grant/Marc Spector) (2022).

Early Life:

Oscar Isaac Hernández Estrada was born in Guatemala City to a Guatemalan mother, Mara Eugenia Estrada Nicolle, and a Cuban father, pulmonologist scar Gonzalo Hernández-Cano.

He has two siblings: an elder sister, Nicole Hernandez Hammer, a climate scientist; and a younger brother, Mike Hernandez, a journalist. Isaac’s family immigrated to the United States when he was five months old, and they frequently relocated throughout the country, including Washington, D.C., Virginia, Louisiana, and Maryland, as well as various locations throughout Florida, most notably Miami, where they eventually settled. His Evangelical background, he has said, was “extremely Christian.” He has also said that he is descended from a French family through his grandpa, defining himself as “certainly a huge mash-up of numerous things.”

When Isaac was a child, he wreaked havoc at his exclusive elementary school, Westminster Christian. “I set off a fire extinguisher in the gym and vandalized a painting,” he said in an interview. He took pleasure in making children laugh. At one point, his instructor had to use a piece of cardboard to separate his desk from the rest of the class. He was eventually expelled.

Isaac’s professional acting career started at the Area Stage Company in Miami Beach, when he was cast in a play by Artistic Director John Rodaz.

In 2000–2001, he also appeared in Miami’s City Theatre’s Summer Shorts short play competition. While in Miami, he was a member of the ska-punk band The Blinking Underdogs, where he played lead guitar and performed vocals. Nick Speck (bass), Bill Sommer (drums), Alan Mills (trombone), Keith Cooper (saxophone), and Matt LaPlant completed the ensemble (guitar). The band was successful, having opened for Green Day and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Isaac spent his formative years as a musician leading a “straight edge” existence.  Isaac put music on hold after getting accepted into the elite Juilliard School’s acting department in 2001. He worked on one of his earliest films, All About the Benjamins, while a student there (2002). He was a member of Group 34 of the Drama Division from 2001 until 2005.
