India: 3.17 lakh cases of cybercrime in the last 18 months

In the last 18 months, a total of 3.17 lakh cases of cybercrime have been reported, and 5,771 FIRs were registered online. Maharashtra and Karnataka are the most affected by cybercrime. 

The Central Government has given this information in the Parliament. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy said that on 30 August 2019, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs launched the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal for online reporting of all types of cybercrime incidents. So that people can get a centralized system for reporting all kinds of cybercrimes.

The Union Minister of State for Home Affairs said in a written reply that, “as per the data, 3,17,439 cybercrime incidents and 5,771 FIRs had been registered in the country since its inception to 28 February 2021”. During this period, 21,562 cybercrimes and 87 FIRs related to Karnataka and 50,806 cybercrime incidents related to Maharashtra and 534 FIRs were registered.

The Union Minister of State for Home further said that the incidents reported on this portal, their conversion to FIR, and subsequent actions are handled by the state’s legal agencies and union territory. The Ministry of Home Affairs regularly interacts with the State and Union Territories and advises them to expedite the disposal of reported cybercrime incidents, emphasizing women and children’s matters.
