Good news! Elon Musk’s Tesla to park in Karnataka, set up manufacturing unit in Bengaluru

Good news for Bengaluru — a hub for global technology companies!

Karnataka is all set to witness the opening up of an electric-car manufacturing unit of Tesla Inc in the state, according to a statement issued by the BS Yediyurappa-led government on Saturday.

The official statement was part of a broader document outlining the highlights of India’s Budget to its people in the local language of Kannada.

Electric car manufacturing unit in state

The state government said, “US firm Tesla Inc will open an electric car manufacturing unit in Karnataka.”

In January 2021, the electric carmaker incorporated Tesla Motors India and Energy Private Limited with its registered office in Karnataka’s Bengaluru.

Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa had said in a tweet, which was subsequently deleted, that “Tesla would start its operations in India with an R&D unit in Bengaluru”.

Immediately, it was not clear if the statement made on Saturday was referring to the same unit. Tesla Inc and the office of BS Yediyurappa did not respond to any request for comments.

SpaceX CEO Musk has tweeted several times about the firm’s impending foray into India. In December 2020, the billionaire had confirmed on Twitter that “Tesla will launch its unit in India in 2021”.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Musk’s Tesla Inc purchased $1.5 billion of Bitcoin, and said it would soon accept it as a form of payment.

India’s plans to boost investment

India has been keen to reduce its oil dependence and cut down on pollution, but its efforts to promote electric vehicles have been stymied by a lack of investment in manufacturing and infrastructure such as charging stations.

To boost investment, India plans to offer $4.6 billion in incentives to companies setting up advanced battery manufacturing facilities, according to a 2020 report.
